Victory Heights Community Council Meeting October 10th

Susan Causin, Victory Heights’ representative to the North District Council, has announced the inaugural meeting (or at least the first in nearly a decade) of the Victory Heights Community Council and invites all our neighbors to attend.  The meeting will be at 7 PM, Wednesday October 10th at the Seattle Mennonite Church on 125th between Lake City Way and 35th (the old Lake City Theater location that long-time residents might recall).  The parking lot can be accessed by an alley from 125th alongside the church or on 33rd.
On the agenda will be the following items:
Introduction and purpose of meeting – Shammara Estrada
History of Victory Heights Community Council – Brad Cummings
Victory Heights and social media – Ryan K. Johnson
LCNA, Pierre Report and other Lake City area questions – Janet Arkill
Funding projects – Eileen Canola

Open forum
Agenda for the future

Twitter Feed Features Seattle Police Neighborhood Activity

Until now, the best way to get real time police activity was to have a police scanner (or an iPhone app–several are available) but the signal-to-noise ratio is pretty bad with most calls being irrelevant to the average citizen.  But now, per this article in the Seattle Times, you can get a Twitter feed that features news and activity from the Seattle Police Department (SPD) targeted for specific neighborhoods.  Victory Heights is PDL2 in SPD lingo, or more formally, North Precinct, Sector Lincoln, Beat L2.  Their twitter feed is here. You can visit the feed with a browser or follow it with your Twitter account.
Incidentally, if you hear sirens from fire or aid trucks and want to know where they are rushing to, this page from the Seattle Fire Department provides real-time 911 dispatches, just click on the “Today” button to generate an up-to-the-minute listing.

Lost Cat on 23rd Ave NE

Our gray and white kitty is missing.  He is tall with long legs and long tail.  He does not have a collar on.
Last seen around 2 pm on Monday at the corner of 104th Way and 23rd NE

Italian Spaghetti House Remodeling To Be Liquor Store

The old Italian Spaghetti House on Lake City Way which has been closed since 2011 is in the middle of a remodel to turn it into a liquor store. I had thought that after Initiative 1183 passed last year that stand-alone liquor stores (albeit state owned) would be something you’d tell your grandchildren once existed before the advent of grocery stores being able to sell hard liquor. Apparently someone thinks there is business to be had here, presumably catering to a market looking for a selection of alcoholic products not available at every Safeway or Costco. A new two-story addition is being added to the former restaurant on the north side of the building with an extended foundation.

Lost Cat

Rachel on 21st Ave NE says

Our tortoise shell (brown, orange, black) cat is missing.  She is slim, sleek, and not very people friendly. She wears a collar with a bell.
We have not seen her since Monday evening.  Please let us know if you have.  We are pretty heartsick over here. Please open the sheds, garages, and old cars.

Upcoming Events Calendar

As the days get shorter (today officially marks less than 12 hours of daylight until next spring) the community events calendar begins to fill up. A good time to get out of the house and meet your neighbors. In chronological order:
Tuesday, September 25th: Northgate Link Light Rail Open House.
Sound Transit will host a public open house this month to update details about the construction schedule, potential noise and nighttime work, truck hauling and utility relocation work. 6 PM – 8 PM, Olympic View Elementary School Cafeteria, 504 NE 95th Street.
Wednesday, September 26th: Thornton Creek Watershed Oversight Council.
Join TCWOC members in hearing about how Seattle plans to manage its urban forest, and what the existing regulations and polices are regarding trees. Also get an update on the Sound Transit North Link after Northgate Station and how it relates to Thornton Creek. 7 PM – 9 PM. St. Matthew’s Parish – Conference Room, 1230 NE 127th Street.
Thursday, September 27th: Thornton Creek Alliance.
This month’s presentation at the Thornton Creek Alliance meeting: “If A Tree Falls In Thornton Creek, Does Anyone Hear It?” 7 PM – 9 PM. Meadowbrook Community Center, 10517 35th Ave NE.
Saturday, September 29th: NE Seattle Tree Walk.
Join the NE Seattle Tree Ambassadors for a tour of the trees near Lake City. This 2-hour walk will help you discover over 60 different trees and cover a .5 mile walking area. 10 am – 12 pm. Meet in the parking lot of the Lake City Presbyterian Church on the corner of 40th Ave NE and NE 123rd St.
Tuesday, October 2nd: Mayor’s Town Hall.
Meet the Mayor. 5:30 PM – 8 PM, Bitter Lake Community Center, 13035 Linden Ave N.
Wednesday, October 3rd: North District Council.
The monthly meeting of the North District Council, which will accept applicants for the annual Neighborhood Street Fund block grants. 7 PM – 9 PM, Lake City Library, 12501 28th Ave. NE.
Saturday, October 6th: Fire Station 39 Meeting.
The City has recommended using the former Fire Station 39 in Lake City site to create housing for homeless and/or low-income families, with ground floor uses that serve building residents and the community at large. The City Council wants community feedback before it makes a decision on the property. These meetings provide an opportunity to give your input. Noon – 2:30 PM, Nathan Hale High School Cafeteria, 10750 30th Ave NE.
Wednesday, October 10th: Victory Heights Community Meeting.
Join Susan Causin, our neighborhood representative on the North District Council, in this first gathering of the Victory Heights Community Council. 7 PM – 9 PM, Seattle Mennonite Church on 125th between Lake City Way and 33rd (long-time residents might recall this as the former home of the Lake City Theater). We’ll have more on the blog about this event as it gets closer.

Breaking: Police Stand-Off on NE 100th St

UPDATE: At approximately 1:35 a transient teenager was arrested after trying to break into one of the houses. A K-9 unit was used to apprehend him, with the suspect being bitten.
At 1 PM on Thursday, a number of Seattle Police Department units (and a hook and ladder truck) converged on the middle NE 100th Street where apparently the resident at 2160 NE 100th has barricaded themselves in the house.  The street is currently closed to traffic.  Updates as we get them.

Thornton Creek Alliance Meeting September 27

The Thornton Creek Alliance will be having its next meeting on September 27th at the Meadowbrook Community Center, 10517 35th Ave NE, from 7 PM to 9 PM. The featured topic this month will be “If a Tree Falls In Thornton Creek, Does Anyone Hear It?” Guest speakers Matt Mega (Seattle Audubon, Urban Forestry Commission), Ruth Williams (Seattle Tree Ambassador), and Cass Turnbull (PlantAmnesty) will discuss the importance of trees to the health & well-being of people & wildlife in our community.  Discover what we can do to protect and promote our urban forest canopy.  Learn about Seattle’s proposed tree ordinance (and why it needs to be better) and take action.  Also, get information about Seattle’s free yard-tree program.
The meeting is free and open to the public and a great way to meet your neighbors who are concerned and interested in Thornton Creek.

Dogs And The City

As I walk around the neighborhood lately, I’ve noticed a spate of homemade signs asking dog owners to pick up after their animals. There are many pets and animals living in Victory Heights and we all need to behave courteously to each other in order to maintain a harmonious community. Nobody would want to find human excrement on their property, dog droppings are no different. Please cleanup after your pet. City law has fines up to $109 for violations.
Along that lines, I heard from Karen on our Facebook page and she wrote,

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed the dog problem at Victory Heights Park. It has become increasingly popular for people to bring their dogs there off-leash even though it is ILLEGAL. My kids love this park, but over the summer we had to quit coming and go to Meadowbrook instead because there were so many dogs. This is very concerning to me especially because my son has special needs & a great fear of dogs. Any ideas on how we can approach this with the city or police department?

Please obey the laws concerning animals, we don’t want to have to call the police about your off-leash pet. Here is a link to off-leash areas in Seattle.

SDOT Proposes Northgate Way Project

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has proposed the 2013 Arterial Asphalt and Concrete (AAC) Program N 105th Street and N/NE Northgate Way paving project.  The project includes reconstructing the existing roadway along N 105th St and N/NE Northgate Way from Greenwood Ave N to Interstate 5. In addition it would involve installation of new signals, closed circuit television (CCTV), license plate recognition (LPR) and digital mapping system (DMS) cameras and signal and street light upgrades along N 105th St, N/NE Northgate Way, and Lake City Way NE between Greenwood Ave N and Lake City Way NE at NE 120th St.

A 14-day comment period begins on September 13, 2012 and will end on September 27, 2012.  A seven-day appeal period will follow. Plans can be viewed at the Planning Resource Center, 700 5th Ave, Suite 2000, or the main branch of the Seattle Public Library and the Northgate branch.
