Democratic Caucuses Scheduled for April 15th

Although President Obama’s nomination as the Democratic candidate for President is a sure thing, most Victory Heights Democrats who wish to participate in the 2012 Caucuses will be meeting at 1PM on Sunday, April 15th at the Summit/Jane Adams School, 11051 34th Ave NE (check for your specific precinct). A few delegates selected at Sunday’s caucuses will move on to conventions at the legislative, county, and state levels, and ultimately the national convention in North Carolina in September as part of the Washington State delegation.
More information available from the Washington State Democrats site.

Posting the old-fashioned way

Prior to the internet how did neighbors communicate? The community bulletin board of course! There are two in Victory Heights, one at the north end of the park on NE 107th, and the other two blocks west at 1520 NE 107th Street. Take a look the next time you are walking your dog or enjoying the neighborhood.

Welcome to the Victory Heights Neighborhood Blog

Victory Heights is a neighborhood located in the north end of Seattle, east of Northgate, north of Maple Leaf, and south of Lake City Way. We felt it was time our part of the city was represented online as a way for neighbors to connect and share news and information about our area.
Please submit items to Ryan at victoryheights@aol.com for inclusion on this blog. We hope you will add comments and feedback to what you see here. Welcome!

How Large Is Victory Heights Anyway?

An article in last month’s Seattle Times about Victory Heights put the northern boundary of the neighborhood at NE 125th Street. The writer interviewed people at the Dick’s Drive-In in Lake City and claimed it as part of Victory Heights.
Even the Seattle City Clerk’s Graphic Indexing Atlas includes most of Lake City.
Where does this put the Pinehurst neighborhood?
Where do you define Victory Heights?

Suspicious Man Seen in Neighborhood April 5th

Reported by a neighbor on 21st Ave between NE 100th & NE 102nd Streets on Thursday:

I just saw a Caucasian man, maybe 40’s, 50’s in a black Ford Ranger License B19329U checking out the house on the NW corner of 21st Ave NE.  He was parked across the street on 21st, alongside the Haucke’s.  He would not answer me when I asked him what he was doing, then he got his camera out and took pictures.  He then got back in his truck and drove up 21st, got out and took pictures of the Dallin’s house.  Again when I asked him what he was doing he warned me to leave him alone.   He then turned around again, went back down to the corner parked, got out and surveyed the house on the corner again.
I reported this to the police.
He could have had a perfectly legitimate reason for doing all this, but I find it very suspicious that he would not tell me what he was doing.

Low cost energy audits available to North Seattle residents

Neighbors can join to save energy, save money, and reduce their carbon footprint

North Seattle residents have the opportunity to participate in SustainableWorks, a Puget Sound based non-profit, that is offering reduced costs energy audits and retrofits. SustainableWorks is partnering with Seattle City Light, WSU Energy Management, and Puget Sound Energy to bring this energy saving opportunity to the community. The purpose of this program is to help homeowners and renters (with landlord approval) make home improvements that reduce their energy use and energy bills. Participants can save on items like furnaces, air sealing, insulation, and hot water heaters, and reduce their energy costs by 20-40%. To learn more about the program, or to sign-up, please visit www.sustainableworks.com, or call the SustainableWorks office at 206-575-2252.
The process begins with a pre-audit to determine eligibility followed by a professional energy audit. Worth approximately $600, the cost of the audit to the homeowner is $95. An energy consultant then explains to the homeowner where they are losing energy and suggests the most cost effective energy saving improvements. Contractors managed by SustainableWorks then complete the energy saving measures chosen by the homeowner. SustainableWorks bundles projects within neighbors to maximize efficiency and reduce the project cost. SustainableWorks also has a loan program with Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union that can help homeowners finance improvements at low to zero percent interest rates.

About SustainableWorks
SustainableWorks is a non-profit focused on creating quality jobs and improving the environment with residential and small commercial energy retrofit projects facilitated through community engagement and participation. SustainableWorks has utilized a $4 million Community Energy Efficiency Program Grant to retrofit close to 400 homes in moderate-income neighborhoods in Spokane, Pierce, King, and Snohomish counties over the last 2 years.
